The balance handed over at the door
The balance is the second half of the fee, settled when she reaches the room rather than at the end, so the money is done with before the hour begins.
Whatever did not travel ahead is settled at the door. On a booking with a deposit behind it that is the remaining half; on a returning guest's same-day hour inside the city it is the whole figure. Either way it happens within the first minute or two of her being in the room, not at the end, and there is a plain reason for the order.
Why it happens first
An hour that opens with a transaction hanging over it is an hour spent half thinking about the transaction. Settling it while she is still putting her bag down closes the subject, and neither of you has to raise it again. It also means the clock and the money agree: the time you booked starts once the practical part is out of the way.
Cash, currency and what the figures are quoted in
The balance is cash in the room. Every figure written anywhere on this site is a euro figure, and euro is the simplest thing to hand over. Cash in another major currency is fine too, and if you want to use it, say so in the thread while the booking is being agreed: the exact amount in that currency is worked out and confirmed to you in writing before she leaves, so nobody is doing arithmetic on a phone in a hotel corridor at two in the afternoon.
What it does not cover
The balance covers the time that was reserved and nothing else. There is no arrival charge, no surcharge for a daylight hour, no line for the journey inside the central districts. Extending on the day is possible if her afternoon allows it, and the extra hour is quoted before it starts rather than added afterwards. A room at Schiphol carries its own arrangement, agreed before the booking is fixed.
